Varsity Soccer Wins ISL AA Regular Season Banner

Last night on Sidwell Friends School's soggy grass field, the Cathedral Varsity Soccer team defeated the Quakers 1-0, and in so doing, won the ISL AA Regular Season Banner!

The Eagles entered the game undefeated in the ISL and having tallied two ties.  Sidwell, however, had one loss going into last night's game, and needed to notch a win over the Eagles in order to win the ISL Banner.  The game was hotly contested between the two teams with post-season implications on the line.  Both teams displayed tremendous effort as they tried to move the ball effectively in the swampy field conditions.

In the 14th minute of the game, freshman Jordan Gasho '18 placed a ball perfectly at Marta Sniezek's '15 feet in the box.  Sniezek, the team's leading scorer, finished the play with a well-placed shot just to the left of the Sidwell goalkeeper.

For the duration of the game, the Quakers mounted an exceptional offense, often setting themselves up for great scoring opportunites.  However, the Eagle defense played one of its best games of the season with backs Emily Guinee '17, Sarah Lipson '15, Rubii Tamen '15 and Emma Boyd '15 taking control and clearing the ball out of the defensive end.  Junior goalkeeper Erica Sanders '16 ended the day with seven saves.

Gasho controlled much of the play in the midfield, distributing the ball effectively to her teammates.  Small twins, Isabella and Gabriella '15, both made great plays in the midfield as well, and helped to stymie the Quaker offense.

The Eagles held on for the remaining 66 minutes of the game to win, 1-0.  Congratulations, Cathedral Varsity Soccer!
