The 2014 Flag Day

NCS celebrated its 114th Flag Day prize ceremony on June 6, 2014. On a perfect June evening, 79 seniors processed across the North Lawn of Washington National Cathedral students before an audience of students in grades 4-11, parents, and friends.

Highlights of the ceremony included the Flag Day address, delivered by Skylar Lovett ’14 (chosen by her classmates for this honor); the transfer of student government leadership from Clare Mathias ’14 and Ilina Mitra ’14 to Talley Snow ’15 and Hannah Loughlin ’15; and the announcement of a record-breaking Senior Parents gift, totaling $537,356; the gift was announced by senior class parents Mary and Chip Arnold.  The ceremony also recognized retiring faculty and staff members Lynda Gattozzi, Sally Rieger, and Harriet Scheuermann.

After student government leaders lowered the flag which has flown over the school during the past year, and raised a new one, Head of School Kathleen O’Neill Jamieson announced that Natasha Turkmani ’14 is this year's winner of the Flag, NCS's highest academic honor.

In keeping with the ceremony’s patriotic theme, Rachel Okun ’14 sang “America the Beautiful” at the opening, and Teresa Speranza ’14, the National Anthem at its close.
