Dr. Sally Rieger, who has taught Latin and Greek at NCS for 33 years, delivered an eloquent keynote address celebrating the intellectual explorations that students and teachers at NCS have shared:

Today we honor academic achievement and intellectual inquiry that comes when teachers and students exchange ideas. We the faculty and the many girls we have taught know we have asked a lot of them. We have pushed our students to develop their skills to be able to take on increasingly complex topics, to take risks, and to go beyond what is pat, formulaic, predictable. We have asked them to think with the likes of Leibnitz and Newton, the Buddha, Jefferson, Baldwin, Garcia Marquez, and, yes, Vergil.

The Cum Laude Society was formed in 1906 by Dr. Abram W. Harris, Director of the Tome School, Port Deposit, MD, who was determined that scholastic achievement of students in secondary schools should be accorded as much recognition as that given to other accomplishments. He envisioned a society, modeled on Phi Beta Kappa, which would encourage and recognize true scholarship. Today, the presence of a Cum Laude chapter at a secondary school signals that superior scholastic achievement is honored. Each year, 20% of the senior class is elected to the society is based on academic achievement in 10th through 12th grade.

Our thanks go to Mathematics Teacher Patricia Howie, NCS Cum Laude chapter president, for once again creating a memorable event to welcome new members to the chapter.
