Ms. Molly Chehak to Head the Middle School

On April 13, NCS Head of School Kathleen O’Neill Jamieson announced that Molly Chehak will serve as the new Head of the Middle School, effective July 6, 2015. Ms. Chehak will assume the position currently held by Jody Soja, is leaving NCS at the end of the school year to become Head of the Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, CT.

“We are confident that Molly Chehak will be a wonderful leader of the Middle School,” said Mrs. Jamieson. “She comes to us with an impressive track record in working with and supporting teachers as well as overseeing curriculum development and faculty evaluation. She brings energy, enthusiasm, and creativity to the job, all of which will benefit the young women and faculty of NCS. She has also taught a variety of English courses at the Upper School level and advises Middle School students on their course of study.”

For the past 10 years Ms. Chehak has served The Bullis School in Potomac, MD in several capacities, most recently as Assistant Principal for Academics in the Upper School (2014-present) and Academic Dean (2012-2014), overseeing divisional curriculum, hiring and evaluating teachers, and directing student course selection. From 2007 to 2012, she served as chair of Upper School English, and implemented several innovative student programs, including a three-week elective intersession as well as the thoughtful integration of technology in the English program. She joined Bullis in 2005 as an Upper School English instructor, and has also been an advisor and grade coordinator. She has been a visiting team member for the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS) accreditation process.

From 1999 to 2003, Ms. Chehak worked as an assistant editor for the Time Warner Book Group, and taught English as a volunteer abroad, 1997-1999. Throughout these years she also was a freelance writer and editor.

Ms. Chehak holds a B.A. in English and American Literature with a specialization in Writing, cum laude, from New York University. She also holds a M.A. in English from Georgetown University. In recent years, she has also served as a humanities instructor in a summer seminar for rising freshmen at Georgetown.

Ms. Chehak is married to Jeff Stout, who works at the U.S. Department of Treasury; they have a son and a daughter: Milo, 8, and Wren, 5. Ms. Chehak has a passion for the arts: she plays the piano and loves dance of all forms. She is also an avid reader.

In making the announcement, Mrs. Jamieson expressed her thanks to the many faculty, staff, students, and parents who interviewed Ms. Chehak and other excellent candidates. The national search included over 80 candidates and nine semi-finalist visits to school.
