Lower School Shines in Dance Videos

Ever since the success of the Lower School’s “flash mob” dance outside the Cathedral in March 2012, NCS/STA Dance Program Director Vladimir Angelov has wanted to continue showcasing the exuberance of our Lower School students.  Now, as the result of a special project he created for the entire Lower School, there are three new delightful dance music videos, one for each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. You can see them in the Video Gallery of this website.

Angelov proposed the content of each video, and worked collaboratively with dance teachers Rachel Hoopes (for the 4th grade) and Katie Harris Banks (5th and 6th grades)  to integrate pre-choreographed routines with movement material created by the students.  He then coordinated with the videographer using the features of the Athletic Center building, the logistics of the videography work, and the ability of the dancers.

The Lower School students and the dance teachers worked on the videos during February’s PE classes.  Class time was divided into three increments; the first to learn the choreography which the teachers prepared; the second, time in which students created their own short routines; and the third, time for placement of the movement material in the setting and practicing spontaneous dance and acting.

The videographer is Ludovic Jolivet, an award-winning cinematographer with whom Angelov has worked for the past 12 years.  Ludovic is on the faculty of George Washington University and has been the official videographer of the Dance Gala for the last five years.
