First-Ever “Dr. King Service Day”

On Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, the Upper School Service Board held its first-ever “Dr. King Service Day,” which marked the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by bringing students together in a day of activities dedicated to helping others.

The day opened with remarks by Anita Hairston, a city planner with Policy Link, and attorney Patrice Pitts, NCS Class of 1975. Both challenged students to follow their calling to help others and to seek ways to make an impact using their gifts and talents. Service Board members shared highlights from Dr. King’s last Sunday homily, which he delivered at the National Cathedral in 1968.

Dozens of Upper School students spent the afternoon serving with a variety of local agencies. A few Eagles stayed on the Close: they gathered bags of winter gear collected as a part of the Cathedral’s King Day clothing drive and made hundreds of sandwiches and other snacks for feeding the homeless. Other students traveled to agencies around the area to serve homeless and low-income individuals and children as well as seniors. Agency partners included: Christ House, Forest Hills Retirement, Martha’s Table, and the National Center for Children and Families. A group of Upper Schoolers also served outdoors along the Anacostia Park, planting trees and working in park upkeep. Way to go, Eagles!
