8th Grade Visits Capitol Hill

On Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, the entire NCS 8th grade went to Capitol Hill on a field trip. They heard from the Clerk of the House of Representatives—the first female clerk in U.S. history—Karen Haas. She spoke to the class on the floor of the House of Representatives, as did House Curator Farar Elliott and Erin Hromada, director of the Office of the House Historian.

Students were also addressed by former Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN), father of Peyton ’19. In addition, two NCS alumnae spoke about their work on the Hill: Krysten Thomas ’09, a legislative correspondent for Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO); and Rosie Brinkerhoff ( a member of the class of 2010 who left NCS after the 9th grade), who is a staff assistant to Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID).

In addition, students visited the Library of Congress and saw the original Magna Carta on the opening day of its exhibition. It was a fun, educational, and instructive field trip. –Social Sciences Teacher David Sahr
