“Imperfectly Perfect”

In NCS’s all-school Cathedral service on March 14, 2014, Music Teacher Tanya Coyne spoke about how girls—and women—struggle with perfectionism, and get caught up in unrealistic ideals of being “smart, beautiful, and talented.” She called upon everyone to challenge societal attitudes:

We all know that these expectations are impossible, even deadly, but as a society we continue to buy into it anyway. But if enough of us refuse to participate, then maybe we can make the values pendulum swing back to a healthy, every-woman reality.

Her ultimate message?

If you can look at yourself at the end of the day and honestly say, “I tried my best,” you have earned the right to feel:
intelligent…
beautiful…
and talented.
